COVID-19 Diaries: Street Corner Preacher

Street corner preacher, Pastor Steve, plies his trade on George Street in Sydney’s CBD as cases of COVID-19 surged yesterday.

Contrary to all medical and scientific advice, he fervently proclaimed, “Get out of your houses, get out of your apartments and listen to the word of God, because only God can cure this virus!”

Several people yelled abuse as they passed by.

A proliferation of street preachers seems to have manifested in the CBD in recent weeks, warning of the Armageddon.

COVID-19 Diaries: Central Station

With the fear of the virus spreading in enclosed, crowded environments and suspicions that it can be communicated by traces left on surfaces, such as handles and seating, fewer and fewer people are using public transport. In addition, with many people now working from home, the crowds at Central Station are gone.

Warning signs are visible around train stations across Sydney and hand sanitiser dispensers are located at entry and exit points.

Social distancing measures have been introduced as well. All seating on platforms has been taped off, forcing passengers to sit at least one seat apart.

COVID-19 Diaries: Business Hit Hard

Both high and low end retailers, and large and small businesses have been hit hard by the economic downturn and shutdown as a result of COVID-19.

In Sydney, some of the most iconic shopping malls are virtually deserted. The upmarket QVB (Queen Victoria Building) is devoid of foot traffic. The famous Tea Rooms have closed down with its tables and chairs left to gather dust as it moves to an online food delivery service.

The Strand too, another upmarket centre, is empty with almost all shops shut.

Yesterday, Myer announced it would stand down 10,000 workers, with its flagship outlet on George Street practically empty. It will close all its outlets from today.

Sydney’s renowned City Gym in Darlinghurst has also had to shut its doors. Its director, Billy Kokkinis, is devastated, having had to sack almost all his staff. He is most worried about the mental health of both his staff and patrons. Meanwhile, rent is still being demanded by his landlord and the bills keep coming in. Billy reckons a complete lockdown should have happened weeks ago. His main message: “Fuck the Government”.

At The Rocks, the usually bustling tourist market is empty, as cafes and restaurants go out of business across the city.

COVID-19 Diaries: Paolina

Paolina, 21, from Mexico, holds a barber shop sign to entice customers in for a haircut on a deserted George Street in Sydney's CBD.

Hairdressers, salons and barbers are one of the few businesses considered ‘essential’ by the Federal Government and therefore allowed to operate under COVID-19.

Paolina earns her income as a sign holder but her job relies on the barber shop surviving the current economic downturn as well as government regulation. In the next few days she hopes to supplement her income as bicycle deliverer for Uber Eats.

As 1 of an estimated 1.7 migrant workers and international students in Australia, Paolina is not eligible for any welfare support.
